"They didn't even know what the term 'serial killer' was."

Memories of a Murder (2003)
Directed by Joon-ho Bong, unrated, 132 minutes

Memories of a Murder is an unsettling and evocative South Korean thriller, based on a true story, about two rural cops and a special investigator who investigate a series of brutal murders. Song Kang-ho is incredible as the small-town cop trying against the odds to solve the crime under a brutal dictatorship that makes the demand for justice high, while impeding their ability to do anything. The film mixes in a substantial amount of dark comedy into even the most disturbing events, and finds humor in the absurdity and chaos of the true story. Memories of a Murder stands out as a truly impressive serial killer film, with beautiful visuals, suspenseful, disturbing moments, dark comedy and a haunting ending. You'll like it if: You like serial killer films, police dramas, dark comedies, Zodiac, The Silence of the Lambs or Wonderland.
