"For me, dying is not the worse thing."

The Vanishing (1988)
Directed by George Sluizer, rated R, 107 minutes

The Vanishing is a tense and moody psychological thriller about a man who, after his girlfriend is abducted while on vacation in France, becomes obsessed with trying to find out what happened to her. The characters are believable and relatable, which makes the horrible situation of the film all the more intense, and the visuals are spooky and enticing. The film starts with a brilliantly constructed scene, where the abduction takes place, that creates suspense like few films can, and the shocks don't let up until the credits. But, The Vanishing's greatest strength is the overpowering and eerie atmosphere that builds to a truly terrifying and haunting ending. You'll like it if: You like foreign thrillers, suspenseful horror films, disturbing films, Vertigo, With a Friend like Harry... or Diabolique.
