"No one has ever, ever paid admission to see an excuse."

American Movie (1999)
Directed by Chris Smith, rated R, 107 minutes

American Movie is an inspiring and yet depressingly funny documentary about a poor, eccentric, hapless filmmaker who struggles, with the help of some close to friends, to complete a horror film. The filmmaker is a strangely inspiring person, as his devotion to his dream of making movies is unwavering despite having no money and questionable talent. However, it's the people that surround him that are most interesting, as they say things funnier than the dialogue of most comedies. American Movie takes an honest, and often despairing look at the making of a low budget film, and has tons of memorably peculiar people. You'll like it if: You like documentaries, movies about movies, Ed Wood, Clerks or Living in Oblivion.
