Arsenic and Old Lace is a very funny and wildly over the top screwball comedy about a man who finds out on his wedding day that his beloved aunt are serial murders, and insanity runs in the family. Cary Grant gives a wonderfully frantic performance as his hilarious character dips deeper and deeper into complete madness. The film has a brilliant premise, filled with dark comedy and fantastic one-liners. Arsenic and Old Lace is a delightful film with a perfect cast that never slows down. You'll like it if: You like dark comedies, Cary Grant or It Happened One Night.
4. Duck Soup (1933) Directed by Leo McCarey, not rated, 68 minutes
Duck Soup is a quick and hysterically funny film that is probably the Marx Brothers best. In Duck Soup, Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) is declared leader of a bankrupt country and ends up declaring war on a bordering country over love. Groucho is fantastic as he delivers a million witty one-liners, and the rest of the Marx Brothers have many funny bits as well. Duck Soup is a hilarious film that is laugh out loud funny all the way to the incredibly funny finale. You'll like it if: Woody Allen's films, the Marx Brothers or A Night at the Opera.
3. Some Like it Hot (1959) Directed by Billy Wilder, not rated, 120 minutes
Some Like it Hot is an exceptionally entertaining and lovable film about two musicians who, after witnessing a mob murder, must flee the state disguised as women in an all female band. Marilyn Monroe gives one of her best and most memorable performances. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are wonderful as the two musicians, and their chemistry carries the film. The film's gags basically never fall flat, and the ending is unforgettable. Some Like it Hot is an extremely entertaining film that never fails to delight. You'll like it if: You like 50's cinema, Marilyn Monroe or The Apartment.
2. Sherlock Jr. (1924) Directed by Buster Keaton, not rated, 45 minutes
Sherlock Jr. is a visually amazing and endearingly funny silent film about a film projectionist whose dreams of being a detective come true as he attempts to prove his innocence after being framed for a robbery. Buster Keaton proves his creative genius, with incredible stunts and an endless stream of hilarious sight gags. The film, thought short, packs in an incredible number of laughs, and never slows down. Sherlock Jr. is an influential and tremendous comedy that will blow you away. You'll like it if: You like silent movies, Buster Keaton or The General.
1. City Lights (1931) Directed by Charles Chaplin, not rated, 87 minutes
City Lights is a brilliantly funny and truly beautiful silent film about a tramp who falls in love with a blind girl. When he learns her sight could be restored with an operation, he sets out to get her the money. Charlie Chaplin, who stars, writes and directs, delivers in every way, with a great plot, powerful direction and a virtuoso performance. The last scene is one of the most beautiful scenes ever filmed, and will undoubtedly affect you. City Lights is a graceful and touching film, and truly is Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece. You like it if: You like romantic comedies, Charlie Chaplin or Modern Times.
How nice to honor these great old films that should never be forgotten.
