An Honest Dark Comedy

The Savages (2007)
Directed by Tamara Jenkins, rated R, 114 minutes

The Savages is a depressingly honest and realistic dark comedy/drama about the difficulties and pitfalls of a brother and sister, as they try to deal with their aging father who is exhibiting signs of dementia and needs to be put in a home. Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman sink right into their roles as siblings to the point that you don't even realize they're acting. The story is thankfully free of cliches, and really offers an honest depiction of dealing with the elderly. The Savages is a simultaneously sad and funny film about a life experience most people will eventually go through. You'll like it if: You like indie movies, "dramadies," The Squid and the Whale or Little Miss Sunshine.
