An Underappreciated Western Classic

The Ox-Bow Incident (1943)
Directed by William A. Wellman, not rated, 75 minutes

The Ox-Bow Incident is a powerful and effective western about two men who come into town as the townspeople are developing a posse to hunt down a man they believe murdered a cattle rancher and stole his cattle. But, when they find three men with the cattle, they're determined to exact justice immediately. Henry Fonda is great as one of the men who comes into town and Dana Andrews is terrific and honest as one of the accused, but it's the tense and masterfully written story that comes first. The Ox-Bow Incident is a beautifully filmed and intelligently written film about law and justice. You'll like it if: You like old westerns, morality plays, film noir, 12 Angry Men or My Darling Clementine.
