5 Must See Robbery/Heist Films

5. Inside Man (2006) Directed by Spike Lee, rated R, 129 minutes
Inside Man is a clever and smartly written heist film about a cop attempting to solve a hostage situation in a bank. Denzel Washington and Clive Owen have excellent chemistry as the cop and robber. They really play off each other, and make you interested in their characters. However, the film's script is its greatest strength, with well-written characters, and a twisting and suspenseful plot. Inside Man never slows down and will keep you on your toes till the credits roll. You'll like it if: You like movies with twisted plots, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee joints, The Taking of the Pelhalm One Two Three or The Score.

4. Rififi (1955) Directed by Jules Dassin, unrated, 118 minutes
Rififi is a massively influential French, noir heist film about four men who develop a perfect plan to rob an impossibly-difficult-to-rob jewelery store. Rififi's incredible robbery scene is as powerful today as it was 50 years ago, and is sure to have your palms sweaty. The robbery scene is so realistic that the Mexican interior ministry banned the film after a series of robberies mimicked the crime in Rififi. Rififi is a unique film that will hold your interest until the intense ending. You'll like it if: You like film noir, French cinema, or Reservoir Dogs.

3. Heat (1995) Directed by Michael Mann, rated R, 171 minutes
Heat is an intense and original film about a brilliant, calm, introverted burglar, who battles against an LAPD officer whose dedicated to his job at the expense of his family. The main draw of the film is seeing Robert De Niro, as the robber, going up against Al Pacino, as the cop, and their scenes together are astonishingly good. And, although the robbery scenes are truly incredible, it's the characters that make Heat really stand out. Heat is an intense and quickly paced crime saga that will not disappoint. You'll like it if: You like action movies, De Niro, Pacino, The Last of the Mohicans or Collateral.

2. The Italian Job (1969) Directed by Peter Collinson, rated G, 99 minutes
The Italian Job is a hilarious, British heist film about an ex-con who puts together a team to pull off a daring robbery. Michael Caine is splendid as the ex-con, with an endless stream funny lines. The film's famous robbery sequence involving a bunch of Mini Coopers is very entertaining, and the film will entertain all the way till one of the best endings of all time. The Italian job has a wonderful 60's feel, filled with vibrant colors and excellent music. The Italian job has it all; car chases, comedy, great music, a heist and an incredible ending. You'll like it if: You like crime-comedies, British cinema, Bullit or Get Carter.

1. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) Directed by Sydney Lumet, rated R, 125 minutes
Dog Day Afternoon is an incredible film based on a true story, that should be seen by everyone. The film is about a first time crook, whose attempt to rob a bank goes wrong, and ends up in an intense hostage situation. Al Pacino offers the best acting of his life in his desperate and complicated role, and John Cazale gives a funny, yet haunting performance. The film brilliantly switches between intense and darkly hilarious. The film works on every level from fantastic directing, to the unique and bold writing. Dog Day Afternoon is smart, original, funny and insanely entertaining film. You'll like it if: You like 70's cinema, dark comedies, Al Pacino, Albino Alligator or Do the Right Thing.
