An Odd Journey

The Straight Story (1999)
Directed by David Lynch, rated G, 112 minutes

David Lynch directing a Disney movie may seem bizarre, at least if you've seen Blue Velvet or Eraserhead, but The Straight Story shows it's possible and even turns out well. The Straight Story is about an old man who uses two canes and is going blind, but decides he must visit his brother who recently had a stroke. Since he can't use his car, he uses a riding lawnmower. And, it's based on a true story. Though the film is slow moving, the curious characters he meets on the road, and his interesting stories keep the film moving. The Straight Story is an inspiring and effective little film. You'll like it if: You like family movies, biographical movies, movies based on true stories, The Elephant Man or Little Miss Sunshine.

  1. I really enjoyed this movie. I'm not sure that I would label it "slow". Obviously, a guy on a tractor isn't going to remind you of the fast and the furious. I thought that the paced was intentional in order to reinforce the idea that this guy was really determined and showed tremendous patience to complete his journey.

Loved the part with the runaway.
