"Between Heaven and Hell There's Always Hollywood!"

Barton Fink (1991)
Directed by Joel Coen, rated R, 116 minutes

Barton Fink is a stylish, one of a kind dark comedy, with surrealistic and horror elements, that is stunningly good and truly unforgettable. The film is about an up-and-coming, intellectual playwright who moves out to Hollywood to write movies. But, writer's block strikes and his only relief comes from the odd traveling salesman from next door. John Turturro sinks into his role as the writer, offering a lovable but pitiful man, and John Goodman perfectly mixes bizarre with funny as the next door neighbor. The writing is remarkably good, with hilarious dialogue, an odd but magnificently entertaining story and deep, relatable characters. Barton Fink is endlessly funny and brilliantly subtle, but above all, it will make you think. You'll like it if: You like movies about Hollywood, dark comedies, Roman Polanski's films, David Lynch's films, The Shining, No Country for Old Men, or The Player.
